Cervantes and Jurien Bay

Our wonderful free camp outside Jurien Bay was a little premature. We should have driven 20 minutes down the road and stayed at Sandy Cape. So thats what we did the next morning. At a whopping $15 per night for staying right on the beach, it was worth it. Wikicamps had a number of comments about a nasty caretaker, but we found him just great! We pulled up in the bus and coach park spot while Dunc had a walk through to try and find a site that would suit us. We asked the caretaker if he could recommend somewhere, and he told us to stay right where we were – perfect!

Sandy Cape was a great base to explore Jurien Bay and Cervantes and The Pinnacles. We popped into the two towns and the children played on both playgrounds. Western Australia has THE BEST childrens playgrounds. They had a ball entertaining themselves, and even Lexie (my big mature tweenie) had fun playing. The sand scales were a big hit (look – we can do MATHS Mum!)

Cervantes was a lovely little town too. It took me a good week or so to get my pronunciation right as I kept saying it the Spanish way (Servuntez) but I finally got my tongue around the Aussie way (Servantees). Aside from being the gateway to The Pinnacles, it also has another great playground and the amazing Lobster Shack. Someone smart cottoned on to the fact that tourists would pay good money to watch people do their job, so now you can tour the factory as they sort and process Rock Lobsters for shipping out to Dubai, Asia and I think it was Finland?! And when we popped past at 4pm, we were encouraged to come back at 12.30 the next day. Hmmmm perfectly timed to eat a lobster lunch after the tour! Sneaky buggers

Hence one night at Sandy Cape turned into 2 and the weather improved which gave the kids the chance to play on the sand dunes – what fun! I got to supervise and come up with multiple reasons for NOT throwing myself off of a hill. Dunc had a lazy morning to himself, and made up for that by delivering a delicious cup of tea to the top of my hill! Bless that man.
