We have had
a WONDERFUL week and a bit to rest and re-group. We were invited to park at
Hedgend Maze by some old friends from our theatre company days way back in the
pre-children past. It was simply fantastic to catch up with them. Lea and
Anthony have three children perfectly aged to entertain ours, and a garden
jam-packed with mazes, minigolf, dinosaur sand pit digs and all sorts of wonder
for children. Suffice to say we rarely saw our kids the whole time we were
there!
Most
evenings were spent socializing, either with them or with other friends who
came to visit. We have eaten INCREDIBLY well over the past little while and the
children are in desperate need of some early nights. But boy, it was FUN.
We have
also spent some time doing mundane and not-so mundane things. Bertha now has
new shoes in addition to a new heart – 2 new tyres on the front wheels. We felt
better about the price after hearing that a good friend spent more on tyres for
her Nissan! Duncan installed the new hot water service, which amazed us all by
arriving from China in only 6 days. Now we are struggling to learn how to set
the shower all over again. He also fixed up the solar wiring, but isn’t entirely happy with the electronics yet – we
had a flat battery on the leveling system this morning so some more fiddling is
required. We also took Bertha to “Show and Tell” at both my school and the children’s school. The kids loved having a tour through
the bus and I think that Lexie and Angus’ classes now have a better understanding of how they live.
The highlight
by far, was our farewell BBQ on the public holiday Monday. We invited family
and a couple of friends up to Hedgend maze for a BBQ. Having such large
families meant that this was 18 adults and 11 children, so catering was a bit
of a challenge – I only have crockery for 8 on board and I didn’t want to use all of Lea and Anthony’s stuff. In the end, mum and I decided on a
sausage sizzle with paper plates and plastic knives and forks. I asked everyone
to bring either a salad or a dessert (and the serving spoons!) and it was
utterly perfect. We intended to have it at the BBQ area of Hedgend Maze, but
Lea and Anthony very kindly offered The Stables, their function area. They then
proceeded to very naughtily set up tables and tablecloths so Dunc and I felt
like we were having a second wedding! It was incredible! Such a wonderful venue
with amazing views and the children all had a ball.
And then we
said our goodbyes, and packed up Bertha. The afore-mentioned flat battery meant
it took a little longer to get going this morning, but we got there in the end.
Lea and Anthony have their garden/carpark back and we have our traveller
lifestyle back. Yeah baby!!
If you are
in Melbourne, or visiting Melbourne, please head over to Hedgend Maze for a
day. The big hedge maze is fantastic, but it is only one of their many things
to do. And the food that Lea makes for the tea rooms is DELICIOUS.
