Whilst in “Kunna”, we decided to head to Wyndham for a day trip. We headed off with Marty
and Belinda, Charlotte and Meg and decided to ‘swing past’ another Boab Prison Tree and some
Aboriginal rock art on the way. These were the highlight of my day! It was a
4WD track out there, and we decided that a gravel road wasn’t enough – we cut straight through the mud
flats, which were MUCH smoother to drive on. We got to the Rock Art first, and
it was wonderful! My first experience of seeing ‘real’ artworks in situ, and it did not
disappoint. There were splatter hand ‘prints’, animals, people, and various
shades of ochre. We had to climb a little bit of a cliff to get up to where the
artwork was, and the setting was just stunning.
Next up was
the tree, which surprised me by having a very small opening. The kids all piled
in, and then someone suggested we could all fit. I have to say, there is NO WAY
I would have fit in there, let alone be able to climb in there prior to
starting this trip. As it was, I wouldn’t describe my entry and exit as graceful, but I was able to make my way
in and out! Dunc just basically stepped over with his orangutan arms and legs –
way to make me feel uncoordinated.
Having
posed for a lot of pics, we headed back towards Wyndham and decided to forgo
the road ENTIRELY this time. We pointed the cars in the direction of town and
followed the other tracks across the flats and came out on the highway just
outside town.
It seemed
time for lunch, and the Rusty Tin Shed Café sold barra burgers, so that was
that. No need to look anywhere else… We then had time to explore the Big Crocodile, Dreamtime Statues and
make our way up to the lookout to see 5 separate rivers join up – it was really
something!
Then it was time to return home via the Afghan Cemetery, with enormous graves which may well contain camels in addition to cameleers. Out last stop was yet another boot tree. We’ve seen a few along this part of the coast, and it was time to stop and document one of them!
