Geiki Gorge
is just outside of Fitzroy Crossing and was our last thing to see there. The
Fitzroy River Lodge where we were staying had tours for $70 per adult, but we
opted for the tours run by the rangers of the Dept. of Environment and Conservation,
which were only $64 for the whole family! Our boat tour up the river went for a
good hour and was packed full of information. Including the fact that it is
named after an English bloke who had never even been here. They are in the
process of reverting to the aboriginal name, which is Darn Goo Gorge. We got to
see lots of little freshie crocs and the stunning natural beauty of the rock
formations.
It was
sunny and rather hot on the boat, but we managed to grab some shade under some
overhangs and along the gorge walls. It was a wonderful hour with the most stunning
scenery. We had thought to do a walk along the ridge after the boat tour, but
by the end, we had seen such beautiful views of the gorge from the river, that
we decided not to do the hike.
Instead, we
decided to enjoy the charms of the Fitzroy Crossing District Hospital, as we
were all suffering from symptoms of a giardia infection. Some of our travelling
friends had already been treated for the same condition, and Dunc and I were
worried that we had it too. I had all of the symptoms bar vomiting and the rest
of the family all had at least one or two each as well. The doctor was happy to
treat the whole family based on our condition, without testing. (“Do you want proof, or treatment?”) We had a single dose of medication, treated
the water in the tanks of the bus and were on our way to feeling better.
We went
back to the caravan park to enjoy the birdlife and the company of our friends
Kent and Anita who are also traveling in a bus. They had arrived the night
before and parked right next to us!
