Right after
exploring Tunnel Creek, we made our way ‘only 35km’ down the road to Windjana Gorge. We
didn’t know until we got there, but it is
the ‘premier place in Australia to see
freshwater crocodiles’. Phew! Lucky we went there!
We actually
only just made it in time. Because it’s a gorge, the sunlight disappears quite early and once there is no
sunshine, the crocodiles all disappear into the water and you can’t really see them. We got there at 3pm and wouldn’t recommend getting there any later in the day.
We just made it in time, and on the way back we saw far fewer crocs than on the
way in. We also got to see them all slither off into the water when they lost
the sun, which was pretty cool.
We only
walked a short way in, as Lexie had jarred her old ankle injury a day or two
earlier and I had forgotten to strap it that day. Lexie and I sat on a lovely
little beach about 800m in to watch the crocs and Dunc and Angus walked a bit
further.
It was
incredibly strange to see these dangerous and wild animals mere metres from us.
They were completely uninterested in us though – we were up on land and they
are far faster in the water. It was amazing to see the sheer quantity of crocs ‘hidden’ in the water though. There are at least 12 crocs in the water in the background of the single croc photo earlier above. (The photo next to the two crocodiles)
