A capital
city! It had been a long time since Darwin, and rather a lot of remote travel
and lazy days in the beach. It was time to experience the traffic lights, peak
hours, paid parking, sights and culture of a “big town”.
We stayed
at the Lawnton Showgrounds, reveling in the cheaper site fees, since it was
still stinkingly humid and we were in need of air conditioning. What’s this rubbish about having left the tropics?! And we had a
lovely few days, cruising the ‘cultural precinct’ with its two art galleries (QAG and GOMA), museum,
waterfront and street markets.
A favourite
of absolutely everyone was Yayoi Kusama’s “The Obliteration Room” in GOMA. We all had a ball sticking our
stickers everywhere. It was lots of fun and I love the swing towards a more
interactive art experience in institutions these days.
