We
continued socialising our way down the east coast and headed to our next
destination – Port Macquarie, the home of my friend Hannah. There wasn’t a lot of big-rig friendly sites in town, so
we headed to the showgrounds at Wauchope. Wauchope is rather like Barcaldine in
QLD – very easy to mispronounce if you are going by its written form. Don’t call it “War-ch-ope”. Oh no no no. It’s pronounced “Waw-hope” without any r or ch sounds. Of
course…
So we made
ourselves comfy at the showgrounds, finding a lovely flat powered site and
giving me time to whip up a batch of muffins before heading out to get to Port Macquarie
in time for our evening rendezvous.
It was a
Friday night and the birthday of Hannah’s little girl Sally. In celebration of this fact, the ‘club’ in town puts on a night of fireworks, live performances, food vans and
free pool balls! I’m not sure that it’s entirely for Sally, but it was perfect
timing. We are mighty impressed with ‘the clubs’ up North. They seem very organised,
with sports facilities and restaurants and very reasonable prices for members.
I guess they are a little like the RSL clubs in Melbourne, but with less pokies
and more benefits for members.
We met up
with Hannah and her family on the foreshore and had a lovely picnic dinner
catching up on gossip, watching the entertainment and chasing balls all over
the place. Poor Hannah had been at work all day, and rushing to collect
children before arriving at the picnic. It made me realise that my life of
leisure was drawing to a close – I would be the one rushing home from work
soon. Eek. It was so lovely to see Hannah and catch up, even if it was only for
a couple of hours.
