When we told the children what we thought we should do (sell the house, buy a bus, drive around Australia) they were initially both incredibly excited. After we told them what it would REALLY mean (no longer having our home, leaving their friends, missing school) they were both still dead keen. And then after 10 minutes we had a few tears from Angus as he realised it would mean “missing his birthday”. The poor boy needed a bit of reassurance that in fact he WOULD still turn 8 in Tasmania, and that indeed he would still get his iPod (family tradition/rule is that they don't get one til they turn 8). Since his birthday would be only a few weeks after our departure, we decided to have an early birthday party so he wouldn’t miss out. His good friend who lives around the corner was also turning 8 on New Years Eve, so the boys had a combined party at AMF with laser tag and bowling.
The end result of this, was that I was up at midnight decorating cupcakes after having packed until 10pm! LOL. It was the most hassle-free party I’ve ever done (just invite designs and cupcakes) but it was also the most poor-ly timed as far as my sanity. We were desperately trying to pack and sort the house still and I think by the 27th December I was starting to feel a little out of control. It was, however, the right thing to do from a Mummy perspective. Angus got to have an absolute ball and say goodbye to his friends in the nicest way. Lexie got to spend a few hours with her two good friends Jazzie and Liv (older sisters of the party attendees) and Dunc got to join in when he “had” to make up numbers for Laser Tag. Just quietly, I think it has been the best birthday party for Dunc ever!
