From
Longford we drove to a beautiful free-camp ($6) site called Myrtle Park in
Targa. It was our first free camp experience and was lovely. Flat (good thing
since the leveling rams still were not working) and quiet and toilets and
showers included. The kids played in the river and fished, and we walked and
had a relaxing time. It was absolutely freezing and I was glad to have packed
our thick fleeces and wooly hats – see Mum! I told you I’d need them!
One night
was enough. Lexie was disappointed that there was a store and toilets and other
people – she thought we would be all by ourselves in the bush whenever we
free-camped. As lovely as it was, after one night, we headed North to Kelso.
Unfortunately to head North, we had to go right back southish to Launceston
before we could meet up with the road leading North. Driving through town we
encountered a woman who loved living dangerously. Despite the signs on the back,
she chose to UNDERTAKE Bertha in her little white corolla while we were driving
around a corner. She scraped through with millimeters to spare and Dunc nearly
wet his pants and the children learnt a few new swear words. The stupidity of
some people is astounding!
Kelso was
lovely. We stayed at the Caravan Park, which cost an absolute fortune as they
charge extra for the children too. It’s a complete rort as its not like we use any extra power for them. We
use what we would for the 2 adults and have to pay extra for them. At least at
Kelso they got the use of the jumping pillow and swimming pool, so we feel they
got some value for money.
The caravan park was also a wildlife reserve, so we
had wombats nosing around Bertha and heard Devils fighting at night.
We stayed
3 nights to be able to drive south (AGAIN) to spend a day zip-lining through
the trees – our best day ever and it needs its own post. We also went to Beaconsfield
and Beauty Point to check out Platypus House and Seahorse World. Hmmm.. upon
reflection, I can see why Lexie may have been a bit tired!
