Having
spent a couple of days in the “big smoke” it was time to get cracking. We were waaay behind “schedule”, if you could call it that. By now it was well into January, and we had
to be back in Melbourne by Jan 20 for Dad’s birthday. We still had the entire stretch of coast from Brisbane to
Melbourne to cover – and ironically this is the most settled part, with the
most small town and destinations. We had decided to skip it entirely and
concentrate on our social life instead, and we still had a few friends to catch
up with. And another border to cross.
The first
was my dear friend Karin, who I had taught with what seems like a million years
ago. She had moved to a lovely place near Byron Bay last year, and it was sooo
wonderful to be able to check out her beautiful place and spend some time with
her again. We had some delicious meals together and were able to catch up and I
realized just how much I had missed her.
We stayed
at the Mullumbimby Showgrounds, which had plenty of space, hoards of children (‘travellers’ not ‘holidayers’) and the best climbing tree we’ve seen so far! We barely saw Angus the entire time we were there. Oh
and it also has the best Farmer’s Market on Friday mornings.
Mullumbimby
was an easy 20 minute drive from both Karin’s place and Byron Bay, though the traffic into town was insane and added
an extra 20 minutes to the trip – crazy! We were able to check out Karin’s market stall, the sights in Byron Bay, the
lighthouse, and Angus’ favourite part – Karin’s dog Alfie.
We also
ticked our last compass point off the bucket list – the most Eastern Point of
Australia. Yippee!

I loved meeting your family and sharing some precious time with you darling girl. I realised also how much I miss you too but was completely relieved and gladdened by the experience that special friends remain just that, regardless of time and geography. It felt like we just took up where we left off. Hope your school year has started with lots of ease and joy. Hugs. Karin
